The anatomy of a mural

Here is a cheesy fly fishing mural I did somewhere in the I.E. so I had to at least give the post a cool title.

Carving low relief

Here are some random pictures of various things I have carved in low relief. I think they call it relief because its such a relief when it is finally finished.

Stenciling and more stenciling

I have had my fair share of stenciling mainly of the spanish revival variety. Its a wonderful technique and I would like to use it on other projects as well. I think the right pattern and color palette would look stunning on even a modern home. Not these of course but they are nice in their own right.

Founders building sign Pomona CA

Also did the Founders building sign around the same time as La Bomba.

Sign for "La Bomba" vintage clothing store in Pomona CA

I did this many moons ago (2000 or 2001?) and it is still there as of Jan 2011. I painted the rest of the facade as well but you cannot see it very well in this photo. I drew up the shape on two sheets of plywood, cut it out, painted and installed it. (It is the sign that says la bomba. The halloween costumes sign was someone else's handy work!)

Old studio

Its so neat to see a past workspace. This is when I was working on other pieces for "House".

Paintings I did for the TV show "House" a while back

I call these "Squarescapes". I did a lot of other paintings for the show but these were my favorite. I think this was back in 2005 or 2006....? Its acrylic medium and paint on plywood. They are pretty large pieces.

Coffee table from reclaimed wood

Yep-the title pretty well sums it up. Its all wood from inside the wall of an old house in Pasadena.

Large L.E.D. Light sculpture for Sababa Restaurant Long Beach CA

We designed and built the light sculpture for Sababa and wrapped it around an existing column. After we framed in the circles we had to take them all down and veneer them. Then we reinstalled them, put the L.E.D. lighting inside and then installed the plexiglass. It was a lot of work but it paid off. THe result is pretty sweet.

Custom lights designed, fabricated and installed Huntington Beach CA

These two lights were designed by me, drawn in full scale and sent off to be fabricated. They came out very nice. It was a little intimidating as these things always are but the clients were very happy and they appreciated all the hard work that went into getting these things completed.

Measure pole for my kids

I came up with this very simple measure pole idea so we could take it with us when we move. It is made out of mahogany.

Various painted lampshades

Yes- I have painted quite a few lampshades in my time and I see many more in my future. Here are a few. I will add some more later. Everything from spanish revival to graffiti style.

Major fireplace tile restoration Los Angeles CA

As you can see this fireplace had been attacked by armies of nincompoops and needed a lot of help. I sculpted and shaped the missing tiles, painted it and cleaned it up. They were not using it for any heating purposes and had installed the wood inside the firebox so I just painted it black.

Carved relief fireplace in Hacienda Heights CA

So here is a substantial carved relief project I took on that took days and days. The concept was to replicate a relief tile fireplace but using plaster and paint instead of ceramic tile. The reason for doing was mainly cost. And perhaps a little insanity. It turned out quite nice. I have done several other fireplaces but not as involved as this one.

Tile riser repair Los Angeles CA

This tile repair job came out quite nice. I used bondo and really tuff paint to repair the damaged stair riser. Its always fun to work in L.A. There never seems to be enough room for my tools that I had to haul up three flights of stairs because the elevator was broke. If you have worked there then you know what I mean!

Old world map room Upland CA

A client hired me to paint an old world map on all four walls. They were quite picky but we eventually nailed it.
